Note: Some symbols may not turn up in the edit view, and cutting and pasting symbols might result in strange HTML code. So make sure you are aware of these effects when using symbols in your document.

This page is not about how people should tweet, rather it’s like a partial style guide to how Gharr tweets. Not all symbols work the same way on different computers.

Gharr tweets with a lot of care, and that means putting a little extra effort into each tweet.

Just some useful notes and a bunch of symbols that are nice to use. there are also some definitions and explanations.

There are several other pages that relate to this one, so check them out:

  1. Texting: http://wp.me/P10Tww-1vC
  2. Emoticons: http://wp.me/P10Tww-1vt

Symbols

These include emoticons, but as defined by Gharr’s experience rather than other sources–but official sources may have been consulted on occasions.

This Emoticon variation is based on a similar idea to hand signals during discussions being related a groups or area of the world. On the internet groups are probably more relevant–as areas become more abstract.

I saw you Ө_Ѳ, you said you were here by accident Ѳ.Ө, but you were glad I was here ӨωӨ, You said you just needed a hug ⋎•ω•⋎, and to borrow 20 credits⋎▶ω◀⋎, so you could afford to take me out to dinner ⋎•‿•⋎. The dinner was great ◕‿◕, but It made me feel so relaxed I fell asleep ◕‸◕, and when I awoke you were gone ;_; , all that was left was an empty plate ⋏•‸•⋏, why didn’t you wake me before you left⋎›_‹⋎…

Cylon Robot: ⌤

the @ symbol is interesting, it was used for commercial reasons. All over the world it’s referred to in different ways including snail, monkey tail, or crazy monkey tail to name a few. People often call @ by the name of “at.” For more information about the @ symbol check out smithsonianmag.com , shadycharacters.co.uk (computer look at character/symbol), and wiki: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/At_sign.

Documentations Symbols & Programming Symbols

Hex 02E0 is related to a error code 0, and so far there seems no way to send 0 to twitter probably for that very reason.

This is apparently the official story of the computer zero: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Slashed_zero. However the fact remains that zero can be confused with the letter o or O; not satisfied with that explanation.

⎔ Not all hexes appear on screen. On twitter: not an impressive shape.

Ø, ∅, ⌀,  ₤ (pound), ¥ (yen), $, € (Euro), ¢, ™, ©, ®, ℅ (care of), ‰ (per thousand), ±, ° (degree), µ (micro), · (mid dot), ⋅ (dot operator),  ×, ÷, ∞, ∝ (proportional to), ƒ (function sign), ∫, ∴, ≈, ≠, ≡, ≤, ≥, ⊂ (sub set), ⊃ (super set), ⊄, ⊆, ⊇, ∩, ∪ (cup?), Δ (delta, increment), ∂ (partial differential), Θ, Σ, Φ, Ω, α, β, γ, δ, θ, κ, λ, ξ, π, ρ (rho), τ (tau), φ, ψ, ω, ∏ (n-ary product), \ (Some keyboards don’t have this; may be used for integer division), – (en dash), — (em dash), †, ‡, • (bullet), … (horizontal ellipsis), ←, ↑, →, ↓, ↔, ½, ¼, ¾, ⅛, ⅜,  ⅝,  ⅞, ∟ (right angle).

More Symbols

Also, if you are interested in punctuation marks, WikiPedia has a very interesting section on this (but other references might provide better explanations of how the punctuations work in practice): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Exclamation_mark—use the right hand side-bar on this page to find the punctuation mark that’s of interest to you.

en dash examples:

  • Hyphen
  • – Minus
  • – en dash
  • — em dash
  • \ (REVERSE SOLIDUS: 92, 5C, is a special character that is not all keyboards have. In twitter it’s used to send direct messages!) Sample uses include the metal wave–do not put this at the front of a tweet! \m/ or the more safe metal wave:\m/.

Using the en dash

The en dash: spans or differentiation, in specific cases replaces the words “and” and “to.”

  1. ⏰ “Between the years 1960—1980…” (incorrect) vs “Between the years 1960–1980…” (correct version). don’t use the em dash for this.
  2. 📌 The anime–manga conference was a success!
  3. 📌 “The high school–university reunion was…”
  4. 🌎 “The France–Spain Border provides a…”
  5. 🌎 “The manufacturing plant is located at 120–126 Right St…”
  6. 📌 This is my businesses cash flow for the January–March period.
  7. 📌 Pakistan beat England 250–190.
  8. ⏰ My Mumbai–Singapore flight was delayed for 2½ hours.
  9. 📌 pages 65–70.
  10. 🔭 there is only 4–5% visible matter in our universe.
  11. ♿ Enabled People Note
  12. ⚧ #LGBTQ — Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans, or Questioning (unsure of sexuality)

MUSIC

  • ★\m/ or ★\m/\m/ (small white star rather then ★ black star is used to set of metal symbol at the beginning of a twitter comment as the “\” must be some sort of command code in twitter). It would be nice to find a clear metal wave symbol; so it does not take four characters to produce it.
  • ☆ NAME — SONG [song/music]: #hashtag (often Japanese music and/or dance)

MIKU SYMBOLS

Symbols often associated with Miku

☆ Miku ❤❤❤ — [song/music/dance]:  #Hatsune (◕ω◕) (light star)

★ Miku — [song/music/dance]:  #Hatsune (dark stars usually depict what Gharr sees as darker forms of Miku’s songs, music and/or dance–however not all songs end up with this symbol because not all scary songs sound scary when played by English-speaking audience)

Sets

A lot of these symbols come from unicode symbols (an advancement on ASCII idea, to include a greater number of the worlds symbols)

I liked this reference for the symbols and examples:

  • {} Set
  • | Such that A = {x | x ∈ ℝ, x ≤ 0}
  • ⋃ union
  • ⋂ Intersection
  • A ⊂ B, ⊄ Proper or strict subset, not (A has less objects then B) or not
  • A ⊃ B, ⊅ Proper or strict superset, not (A has more objects then B) or not
  • ⊆, ⊈ Subset, not subset, not
  • ⊇, ⊉ Superset, not
  • 2A Power set of A (all subsets of A)
  • A = B Both sets have the same elements
  • AC Compliment of A, all objects that don’t belong to set A
  • A \ B Relative compliment, objects that belong to A but not to B
  • A ∆ B Symmetric difference, objects that belong to A or B, but not their intersection
  • ∈, ∉ has set membership, not/no
  • (a,b) ordered pair
  • A×B Cartesian Product
  • |A| cardinality, the number of elements of set A
  • Ø Empty Set
  • 0 Natural Numbers (whole numbers) including zero
  • 1 Natural Numbers (whole numbers) excluding zero
  • ℤ All integer numbers including negative ones
  • 𝕌 Universal set (set of all possible values)
  • ℂ Complex Numbers
  • 𝔾 & 𝙷 I can remember this in maths, but forgot what it means

Money Symbols

  • $ Used by a number of countries, and often has letters in front of it.
  • kr symbol (or letters) Danish (Dkr), Norwegian krones, Swedish krona, Faroese and Icelandic (Íkr) króna
  • ฿ Bitcoin or Thai baht
  • Euro
  • Philippine peso
  • £ Pound
  • Israeli new shekel
  • North Korean and South Korean won
  • ¥ Japanese yen, Chinese Renminbi yuan
  • Polish złoty
  • Vietnamese đồng
  • The Russian Ruble (rub. = руб) is not available. It looks like a P with a line below it. Perhaps the West is ashamed to admit that even the old time Russian communists used money. Today–despite a troubled world–Russia is a part of the world community (except when it comes to their monetary symbol it seems), and their country works exactly in the same way as other economies. We also get to hang out with them on the social networks. It is hard to say if Russia will become a part of the economic union in Europe, or if they will form a economic block of their own group, or if they will decide keep their currency separate from all other countries (the historic situation for many of the world’s currencies, and many countries continue to use this separated money system rather then forming blocks or groups). Unicode (future text symbol) for the Russian Ruble is “U+20BD”, and HTML (future text symbol) “& # 8381;”

Gharr’s Symbols and Emotions

These symbols meaning (and possibly the symbols themselves) are designed or used by Gharr–except where noted–and may change meaning without notice if a more popular interpretation is found.

This is a  symbol and emoticon style manual for Gharr’s tweets.

The concept behind the specific use of these symbols is based around the idea that communities, or groups use their own variations of symbols and meanings for symbols (similar to the idea that hand signalling is local to a specific region). No doubt standards will be applied as the internet tries to stamp a global definitions to everything, but on this Gharr is not sure such efforts will succeed as communities on the internet have so many different focuses and interests.

It’s generally unwise to use negative emotions, as they may be too strong to use in the international community.

The symbols here may have more than one meaning or form depending on the community they address. Such differences should be avoided in Gharr’s tweets if possible as they might cause confusion among the communities–it’s better to make notes of other meanings, but stick to one favorite definition that matches the symbol or texting.
