Videos displayed twice

June 2013 issues

Please note: this issue has been resolved, and things have gone back to the way they were. This article has been left, as is, for historical purposes.

Initial Situation

Sorry to visitors of this blog/website, but videos appear to be displayed twice. At the moment it is not known how this can be fixed.

There have been changes to the console recently also (that is used to edit documents).

This double video problem may be a mobile telephone feature added to WordPress, or a new feature added to all WordPress sites (possibly thumbnails). Such changes should not affect old posts—however this does not seem to be the case.

The current effected videos are only the links that have an “open in another window or tab feature.” Nearly all the videos here have this feature enabled so a visitor to the site will not lose the page they are on when they click on a link.

Hopefully this is a bug and will be fixed soon, rather than being a permanent feature in html, CSS and whatever other things they have now days. Of course it may be just WordPress that is altering the behavior of established HTML code.

The Problems are described here

The problem lasted for several days at least. The strange thing was that there was not much information about it on the internet—a real worry!

What was occurring:

A number of social mini blogs like g+, twitter and so on allow users to simply type a URL (website address) into the address bar, and the contents will be displayed automatically. For example URL’s to videos and pictures will be displayed automatically.

For example if you typed this: my favorite picture: http://zunko.jp/sozai/zunkot_s/zzm_a1zunko08.png

It might show up as this:

my favorite picture:

child Dung Northeast

child Dung Northeast–a respectable name in most parts of the world (except in English-speaking countries).

Also if you typed this: my favorite video: http://youtu.be/vJRGU29oE98

It would show up as this

my favorite video:

Notice that people can no longer share the video or picture, as the link has been automatically converted to a video or picture. Also notice that if ten pages of this were displayed, it might now have to load 20 videos and pictures, rather than just 10—very time-consuming. Also notice that the look of the article has been altered making it look quite bad to any visitors.

The Problem Seems to Have Been Solved

While the console is still different when you edit things, the automatic conversion seems to have been removed. Apparently wordpress sites are automatically updated (unless you get yours from http://wordpress.org/.

I can understand that WordPress wants to get some of the action that twitter, facebook, and G+ has, but what was done by accident or on purpose is the wrong way to go about it.

People often become confused when an application tries to be all things. There is also a worry when that diversification into many products occur, as it’s one of those minor features that might suddenly disappear one day.

While we might feel a minor product like a twitter like device on WordPress might disappear, we would not think that a site like twitter, that is focused on 140 character communications, will be casual about eliminating itself from the market–in fact we would expect twitter to have strong survival instincts and try to stick around for as long as possible, and adapt as required to new technologies.

Anyway, things are back to almost the way they were for this blog/website. However the actions of WordPress, is a worry–and the lack of communications about what happened even a larger worry.

Two worries still exist however:

  1. is WordPress still committed to drastically changing the way its blogs/websites works—and thus causing a major impact on some or a lot of blogs/websites.
  2. is WordPress loosing its market share and the folks over there are starting to get worried. For example mobile-telephones use the internet, but might possibly avoid using WordPress.

This article was one that the author did not want to make, but the situation seemed quite serious, and perhaps many other people (authors of their own WordPress blog and/or website) were also concerned by the problems that occurred.
