Incidentally Amelie is also one of the authors favorite movies. It’s lovely the way the hero of the story tries to right the world by rescuing individual people in her own strange way. It’s also lovely the way society is portrayed as groups of people with strange customs that define who they are: in the case of Amelie it’s using established and traditional “sayings” that defines you as part of the group. Modern France had a very romantic and innocent image that is reflected in this movie. That wonderful, innocent image of France was lost to the author when the Rainbow Warrior was bombed, and the subsequent studies that eventually followed about Frances involvement in other countries. Amélie is great movie and well worth watching–the author watched the film in a historic movie theater that really added to the magical atmosphere that gave a real feeling something amazing was about to happen.
